How to Choose the Right Soccer Goal
For more than 70 years, Jaypro has built soccer goals that coaches and facility managers trust. Our premium aluminum soccer goals deliver industry-leading strength and stability at a better value, from youth practice fields to official match play. Built for every level. Built to last.
A soccer goal is a long-term investment, and the right one depends on more than size. Who plays on the field, how often it changes over, what surface it sits on, and whether it’s shared with other sports all shape the best choice. Here’s how to work through it.
Questions to Answer Before You Buy
- What ages and levels play on this field?
- Does the field host high school or college matches?
- Will goals stay in place, or move between fields and age groups?
- Is the field natural grass or artificial turf?
- Is the field shared with football or other sports?
- How will the goals be anchored, and who will maintain them?
Start With the Level of Play
Level of play decides two things: goal size and frame requirements. High school, college, and adult 11v11 play use a full 8 ft. x 24 ft. goal. High school (NFHS) and college (NCAA) rules also require posts and a crossbar between 4 and 5 inches wide, and the IFAB Laws of the Game followed by FIFA set a 5 inch maximum. Youth programs follow U.S. Soccer’s small-sided standards, which set smaller maximum goal sizes for younger players.
| Level of Play | Goal Size | Recommended Jaypro Goal |
|---|---|---|
| College and high school | 8 ft. x 24 ft., 4 to 5 in. frame | Nova regulation series (4″ O.D. frame) |
| Adult club and recreation | 8 ft. x 24 ft. | Nova series or 8 x 24 club goals |
| U13 and up | 8 ft. x 24 ft. | Nova series or 8 x 24 club goals |
| U11 to U12 (9v9) | Up to 7 ft. x 21 ft. | 7 x 21 club goals |
| U9 to U10 (7v7) | Up to 6.5 ft. x 18.5 ft. | 6.5 x 18.5 club goals |
| U6 to U8 (4v4) | Up to 4 ft. x 6 ft. | 4 x 6 club goals |
If your field ever hosts high school or college games, start with Jaypro’s Nova regulation goals. For youth, club, and recreational programs, Jaypro club goals come in six sizes from 4 ft. x 6 ft. to 8 ft. x 24 ft. Local leagues can set their own rules, so confirm goal sizes with your league or state association.
Portable or Permanent?
Next, think about how the field is used day to day. Portable goals make sense when fields are shared, mowed often, or reconfigured for different age groups during the week. Permanent or in-ground anchored setups suit dedicated game fields where the goals stay put all season.
Jaypro Nova goals are built for both. Each one includes four ground anchors, and options include a wheel kit for moving goals around the complex and in-ground anchor weldments (SGA-60) for a more permanent setup. Whichever route you choose, the goal must stay anchored at all times.
Shared Fields and Multi-Use Stadiums
Many high school stadiums host both soccer and football, which can make goal placement tricky. The Nova Premiere Adjustable (NOVA-600AX) is built for exactly this situation. It has an adjustable base frame assembly for multi-use fields, and an optional soccer/football anchor kit (SFGA-4, 5, 6) is available for fields with football goal posts.
Frame, Backstays, and Finish
Once you know the size and setup, compare construction. Aluminum is the preferred material for goal faces: it’s strong, lighter to move, and won’t rust the way bare steel does. Behind the goal face, backstay design affects both stability and how the goal looks and plays.
- Steel backstays and rear ground crossbar: Goals like the Nova Classic (NOVA-400) and Nova Prime (NOVA-500) use steel backstays and a rear ground crossbar that run back 9-1/2 feet, adding weight low and to the rear for a more stable base.
- European backstays: The all aluminum Nova Premiere (NOVA-600) uses a 1.90″ aluminum European backstay with a 4 foot top depth, which holds the net away from the goalkeeper and gives the goal a classic international look.
- Finish: All Nova goals have white powder coated goal faces, and the Nova Prime and Nova Premiere are powder coated white from front to back for a clean, uniform look.
Nets and Net Attachment
Every Jaypro Nova and club goal uses the Easy Track net attachment system, a channel built into the frame that rigid net clips snap into. The clips sit flush, so there’s no hardware sticking out, and nets go on and come off quickly. Nova Prime and Nova Premiere goals include official white hex nets, and Jaypro club goals include 4″ square mesh white nets.
Grass Fields vs. Turf Fields
The surface under your goals changes how you anchor them, so it’s one of the most important things to plan for.
Natural grass fields can be anchored with stakes that go into the soil and hold the goal’s base frame down. Jaypro Nova Prime, Nova Premiere, and Nova Premiere Adjustable goals include a set of four J-hook stake ground anchors, and the Nova Classic includes four auger stake anchors. For dedicated game fields where goals stay in place, in-ground anchor weldments (SGA-60) offer a more permanent setup.
Artificial turf fields are different. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that sand bags or other counterweights can be an effective alternative on surfaces like artificial turf, where a conventional anchor can’t be driven into the ground. Jaypro offers sand bags (SWB-451W / SWB-451) and a weight anchor kit (SGA-50) for Nova goals, and a weight anchor (SGA-51) for Classic Club goals. If you’re building a new turf field, talk with your field builder and the Jaypro team early about how goals will be anchored.
On either surface, use enough weight for your goal. Jaypro’s Secure 4 Safety program includes an ASTM soccer goal counterweight chart to help you get it right, and goals should be re-anchored every time they’re moved.
Jaypro’s Commitment to Soccer Goal Safety
No goal is the right goal unless it’s set up safely. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has published its Guidelines for Movable Soccer Goal Safety to help schools, parks, and clubs prevent tip-over injuries, and every major rule book requires goals to be anchored, secured, or counterweighted. At Jaypro, we treat safety as part of the product, not an add-on. We also help shape the standards themselves, working with ASTM International and other manufacturers to develop and improve safety standards across many sports and equipment categories.
Jaypro soccer goals are built to meet the safety requirements of ASTM F2950, the Standard Safety and Performance Specification for Soccer Goals. Our Secure 4 Safety program helps facilities set up, anchor, and maintain their goals the right way, including an ASTM soccer goal counterweight chart so you know how much weight your goal needs.
Soccer Goal Safety Checklist
- Keep goals anchored or counterweighted at all times, in play, in storage, or on the sideline
- Re-anchor portable goals every time they are moved
- Secure goals at the rear, with anchors flush to the ground and clearly visible
- Never let anyone climb on, hang from, or do chin-ups on a goal
- Inspect goals, anchors, and hardware regularly and replace anything worn or damaged

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on who plays on it. High school, college, and adult 11v11 play use 8 ft. x 24 ft. goals. Under U.S. Soccer’s small-sided standards, U11 to U12 use goals up to 7 ft. x 21 ft., U9 to U10 up to 6.5 ft. x 18.5 ft., and U6 to U8 up to 4 ft. x 6 ft.
High school (NFHS) and college (NCAA) rules require posts and a crossbar between 4 and 5 inches wide. Jaypro club goals use a 3″ O.D. frame and are built for club, recreational, youth, and practice play. For high school or college matches, choose a Nova regulation goal with a 4″ O.D. frame.
Portable goals work best on fields that are shared, mowed often, or rearranged for different age groups. Permanent or in-ground anchored setups suit dedicated game fields. Either way, the goal must be anchored at all times. Jaypro Nova goals offer optional wheel kits and in-ground anchor weldments to fit both approaches.
The Jaypro Nova Premiere Adjustable (NOVA-600AX) has an adjustable base frame assembly built for multi-use fields, and an optional soccer/football anchor kit is available for fields with football goal posts.
Anchor the goal at the rear with anchors flush to the ground and clearly visible, and keep it anchored at all times. On natural grass, stake anchors like Jaypro’s J-hook and auger stakes hold the base frame in the soil, and in-ground anchor weldments (SGA-60) suit permanent setups. Jaypro’s Secure 4 Safety program includes an ASTM soccer goal counterweight chart to help determine how much weight a goal needs.
On artificial turf, where stakes can’t be driven into the ground, sand bags or counterweights are the common solution. Jaypro offers sand bags (SWB-451W / SWB-451) and a weight anchor kit (SGA-50) for Nova goals and a weight anchor (SGA-51) for Classic Club goals. Use Jaypro’s ASTM soccer goal counterweight chart to make sure the goal has enough weight.
